The SNAP team is composed of specially trained inclusion specialists at each R&R in Los Angeles County and pediatric specialists representing a variety of professional disciplines. The team addresses issues and concerns of child care providers on how to work more effectively with families and children with special needs. The SNAP team members consist of:
Behavior Specialist - assesses and evaluates the function and characteristics of a child’s behavior in his natural environment; provides training and recommendations to assist providers or parents in promoting positive behavior changes in children;
Clinical Psychologist - provides consultation, information, and resources, related to the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of psychological illnesses;
Developmental Intervention Specialist (DIS) - provides consultation, technical assistance, and intervention strategies that will help children reach the next step in their development. The DIS looks at a child’s motor, language, self-help, emotional, personal, social, and problem solving, as well as his or her concept development.
Inclusion Specialist - the gateway to the SNAP project. Parents are provided with enhanced child care referrals for their children with special needs. The Inclusion Specialist also advocates for children with disabilities within the school district and regional center systems. The Inclusion Specialist coordinates training and educational workshops for child care providers, provides Technical Assistance via telephone or program visits to providers.
Legal Counsel - through a partnership with Child Care Public Counsel we are able to provide information concerning the legal rights and responsibilities of parents and providers. Information pertaining to American Disabilities Act (ADA), the individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Individual Education Plans, Individual Family Service Plans and other legislation and legal documents that address access to services. Public Counsel provides legal information related to child care providers. They will also provide some legal advisory services and resources.
Mental Health Specialist - offers consultation, informal assessment and recommendations assisting children with special needs and their families. Mental Health Specialist addresses concerns related to developmental issues with an emphasis on attachment, social emotional-communication skills and family relationships.
Occupational Therapist - provides technical assistance and recommendations to develop, improve, or restore functional daily living skills. These skills include: 1.Work or school performance such as pre-handwriting and perceptual skills; 2.Play or leisure activities; 3.Self-help skills such as feeding and dressing. 4.With assistance from the child, parent, and provider, the therapist designs goals and outcomes and environmental adaptations to enhance independence and participation in daily activities.
Physical Therapist - offers consultation and technical assistance in areas of gross motor skills which include, but are not limited to: 1.Proper body posture and positioning of children during activities; 2.Appropriate and adaptive suggestions for toys; 3.Appropriate and safe handling techniques for children with special needs; 4.Safety in lifting/carrying, and back-saving techniques for providers.
Registered Nurse - provides technical assistance, consultation, education, and advocacy in areas related to health maintenance, safety, hygiene, and restoration from disease.
Speech and Language Pathologist - provides consultation and training to parents, providers, and other professionals working with children with disabilities. These consultations include providing information about speech and language development, the diagnosis and treatment of speech and language disorders in children with a wide range of disabilities, and how to enhance speech and language development in the home and classroom.
